Backdrop : Gwangju, 1980 in the month of May

On one sunny day, Hwang Hee Tae stood by the road in his blue suit. Bidding time until he has to meet a girl who potentially will become his wife. It is not because he was interested in getting married. 

He was desperate and so, he made an agreement with his father. In return for meeting this girl, his father will give him a large amount of money without questions. As he was distracted by his thoughts a boy ran passed and stepped on his shoes. He cuss under his breath looking at his now filthy shoes. The sound of car breaking and screams were heard in that moment. The boy lying unconscious in front of a car. The boy's mother calling for help.

Hwang Hee Tae, a top medical student froze in his tracks. Flashbacks of his friend banging his door, a bloodied girl on his back. Hwang Hee Tae was in a panic state. Frozen by fear of his past. 

At that moment, a girl ran pass him to the boy. The wind was blowing her hair. As she took off the scarves around her neck the sun was shining down on her. Hwang Hee Tae saw her in slow motion. He thought about meeting her but remembered his promised to his father and he made his way to the hotel where he was to meet his date.

Kim Myung Hee is a nurse. She works around the clock until her feet bleeds and sends her hard earned money home to her family. She dreams of studying abroad and has been saving for that dream. Her shoes are worn out with holes in them.

Kim Myung Hee's bestfriend, Soo Ryeon is the daughter of an influencial businessman. She lives a sheltered life but she goes lurking in the middle of the night leading a group of protestors.

One night, Soo Ryeon and her comrades were arrested by the police. They were caught trespassing a factory. Soo Ryeon was caught red-handed with protest flyers in her hands. She was immediately released the next day thanks to her father.

Soo Ryeon begged her father to release her friends to which her father offered her a deal. Meet this boy for at least 3 times and her friends will go free. Soo Ryeon's father has agreed for her to be wed to the boy - Hwang Hee Tae, the son of Chief of Anti Communist whose father can provide funding for their business.

Soo Ryeon remains to be ignorant and immature and asked her friend Kim Myung Hee to go in her place. In return for her deed, Soo Ryeon will pay for her flight ticket abroad. Soo Ryeon had Myung Hee wear her clothes and shoes and bags to make her identity believable.

Soo Ryeon also gave Myung Hee multiple tips to make Hee Tae lose interest in her.

Everything seems set from the get go to make Hwang Hee Tae lose interest in the fake Soo Ryeon.

There was only one problem.

Their plan backfired.
